When Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 12e line, we were ready to bet that the Xiaomi 12X is only reserved for certain markets and that it will not arrive in Italy. We were wrong. It is not only available in our country, but perhaps the most attractive option for users, perhaps because of the value for money. Here’s how it works.
Let’s start, first of all, with the aesthetics, which offer an advantage that is hardly found in high-end smartphones: low weight and size. It is 8.2 mm thick and weighs only 176 grams. It has perfectly compact dimensions, can be used well in one hand and fits inside a trouser pocket without much difficulty. It is a station that will surely make happy those who do not want to part with powerful smartphones, but do not want to have a small “brick” weighing 200 grams in their hands.
On the front, there is a 6.29-inch AMOLED display, which is only interrupted by a perforated compartment placed in the upper part in the middle. The frame is made of aluminum while Gorilla Glass Victus provides strong protection. In general, you immediately feel a sensation of solidity, accompanied by a certain lightness that you do not taste.
The back of the device is quite clean, and even if the camera unit is well equipped and with a visible folded camera, it is still compact in size, certainly more compact than many other competitors. The color option under test is blue, which is a very soft shade, which makes the device modern and youthful, without being too invasive.
As mentioned earlier, the Xiaomi 12X sports a 6.28-inch AMOLED display, with a resolution of Full HD +, but with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz with AdaptiveSync. The screen tends to curve slightly at the edges – it’s not quite as flat as a flat screen, but it doesn’t bend as much as curved displays either.
The screen is very good, and it has HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support. Its brightness reaches 1100 nits, which makes the screen very bright and well readable even in outdoor sunlight conditions. Below the display is the fingerprint sensor, which works well, for the most part resulting in responsiveness and accuracy.
As for the audio part of the device, there are stereo speakers tuned by Harman Kardon, and there is Dolby Atmos support. In general, the device looks very good, with good volume and not bad quality, and therefore it is excellent for gaming and watching multimedia content.
Among the main differences of the Xiaomi 12X with the 12 and 12 Pro models, is the processor. Instead of installing the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, this smartphone has the Snapdragon 870 in action. Depending on the model, the Xiaomi 12X comes in configurations of 8 or 12 GB of RAM, and with 128 or 256 GB of built-in memory. Memories of UFS 3.1 have been added to this, and if you add up all these numbers, you will reach fluidity in everyday life, however, it will be very high.
If it is not for what is written on paper, then this terminal may be confused with which part of the range, if we are talking about the smoothness and speed of starting, running and using all applications. Also because the 120Hz screen makes everything very smooth. Of course, if you want to be very precise, there are terminals that install the Snapdragon 888 at this price.
It is clear that the Xiaomi 12X offers support for 5G networks, which really seems to be an indispensable parameter, at least and first of all for a device in this price range.
What to say: Xiaomi 12 works very well, has no lag of any kind, and is used beautifully, both for speed and handling, given its small size. If you can’t provide a state for the datasheet, it will be hard to notice the differences with smartphones that use more powerful processors anyway.
Also, while the Snapdreagon 870 is less powerful on paper than the 888 and Gen 1, it probably manages better temperatures. During daily use, and especially in these extremely hot months, we made sure that the temperature of the smartphone is always under control. Xiaomi 12X remains as low as 33 degrees as the outside temperature, which always makes its use a pleasure.
For phone considerations, the Xiaomi 12X offers a slot that accepts two Nano Sims, with support for 5G, VoLTE, and VoWiFi. All of this translates to high quality calls. No problems to report, both incoming and outgoing: the sound is always crystal clear.
On the back, the Xiaomi 12X has a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor, the same sensor also found in the Xiaomi 12. It is surrounded by a 13MP wide-angle lens with a 123-degree field of view and a 5MP macro lens.
Images in daylight are sharp and full of detail, even if the image correction software algorithms sometimes return images, yes vivid and sunny, but with some very artificial features.
With its high pixel count and optical image stabilization, the camera’s digital zoom works well and OIS also helps maintain adequate performance in low-light conditions; Of course, it also does its job when it comes to adequately stabilizing videos. The maximum supported video resolution is 8K at 24fps, and you can switch between the wide-angle and prime cameras when recording in 4K and 30fps. You can also choose to record in 4K and 60fps using only the main camera.
Zooming out, the program seamlessly switches to the ultra-wide-angle lens located at the bottom of the matrix. In general, the wide-angle photos are very pleasant, with good focus to the edges, a detail not to be underestimated, especially since it is better than many other smartphones.
The third and final camera, the 5MP macro sensor, does a decent job, although the results are often not much better than using the main camera’s digital zoom.
As usual, we leave you with a rich set of photos for you to evaluate the capabilities of the cameras of this device:
Software and MIUI
Xiaomi 12X is updated to Android 12 with the MIUI 13 user interface from Xiaomi. Its security patches are in effect as of August 2022 at the time of writing.
At the software level, it should be noted that MIUI 13 is practically the same as the 12, even if it seems that many bugs that hit Xiaomi terminals in the past have been resolved, especially with the punctuality of notifications. The usual obnoxious personal ads are always located under the folders, which can be disabled, even if by default MIUI continues to show ads on ads, hiding them under the heading “Advice” to the user.
However, it continues to annoy that there are so many pre-installed apps. Fortunately, you can get rid of everything in just a few steps, but it is still a minor issue. We noticed a small issue with Android Auto and the resolution on the car’s screen.
Light terminal, but the battery is still good 4500 mAh. This number translates into excellent autonomy, which results in using the device for a full day without any worry of having to resort to intermediate recharges, even with a medium heavy load.
Xiaomi 12X is, in our opinion, a great smartphone. He let go of some of the most important features, which most of them will only notice on paper. In everyday use, it is difficult to recognize it from the top of the range and this is because aesthetically it is presented as a premium terminal, it has an excellent screen with 120Hz refresh, and even the Snapdragon 870 does a great job in terms of fluidity and performance.
The Xiaomi 12X certainly caters to this range of users who are looking for a compact terminal, but they don’t want to completely sacrifice performance. Furthermore, at the time of writing, the price is less than €500 as Street Prince, which we think is quite appropriate. Also because Xiaomi 12X competitors have much higher prices.
- Durable and compact
- Display and sound
- No wireless charging, no IP68 . certification
- There is no telephoto lens
You can buy it on Amazon for about 549 euros, excluding promotions that bring the list price to less than 500 euros.
