Strange fate, is the iPad Pro 12.9 with M2 processor. We took it right away because it is the most powerful computer of this iPad generation, it has all the characteristics of being a real bomb (and it really is) but it was almost ignored simply because it is an update of the previous iPad Pro M1. .
In fact, this is, in our opinion, a huge mistake in perspective. Of course, if you have an iPad Pro M1, it doesn’t make much sense to get another tablet that is practically identical. But Logic should target those who do not have an iPad Pro and want to buy the best available in the market. This maximum certainly should house an M2 processor and Apple did the right thing to put it in without wasting time on a design revamp that is due to change but certainly not this year.
The new iPad Pro 12.9 M2 we tested is identical to the M1 in every way except for the processor, of course.
M2 for iPad means CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, GPU with 10 cores and Neural Engine with 16 cores. Moreover, the memory capacity (8 or 16 GB) is 100 GB per second. These are substantial changes compared to the previous M1 which has a similar official core count (CPU 8, GPU only 8 though and NR 16) but doesn’t have the same bandwidth. Moreover, the media engine in the M2 SoC lets you do many things: H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW with hardware acceleration; Video decoding engine Video encoding engine ProRes encoding and decoding engine.
Battery performance is incredibly the same with performance being improved by no less than a fifth.
Another novelty, which is based on the M2 chip and software, is the Apple Pencil’s contactless operating mode, which means that it moves one centimeter and a few millimeters above the text, leaving a halo that different programs use for different functions (preview of the stroke, watercolor effect, etc.) .
Everything else is the same even the weight and dimensions, which are identical. It’s one of those cases where one can’t complain in the least that Apple didn’t crack jokes with accessory compatibility and above all caps, given that a keyboard with integrated support costs €429.
One of the reasons to buy this iPad is definitely the processor which is a bomb backed by enough memory. But the screen is the other reason: it does not change compared to the one that the M1 has but it is still worth remembering how it is made.
12.9-inch (diagonal) Small LED-backlit Liquid Retina XDR display with IPS technology, 2732 x 2048 pixels at 264ppi, SDR max brightness at 600 nits, XDR max brightness: 1000 nits full screen, 1600 nits peak ppm (HDR only), ProMotion technology, P3 (wide color gamut), True Tone.
We must remember that USB-C is compatible with Thunderbolt / Usb 4, and the WiFi block is now Wi Fi 6E (and no longer 6) with 802.11a / b / g / n / ac / ax 2.4GHz and 5GHz for it Simultaneous dual band up to 2.4Gbps (the M1 stopped at 1.2Gbps) and that the cellular part has a limit that “cuts” the GSM-Edge network. Bluetooth moves from 5.0 to 5.3.
Video recording goes up to ProRes up to 4K and 30fps (1080p at 30fps on models with 128GB of storage) which instead stops with the M1 at 4K 24fps, 25fps, or 30fps second or 60 fps.
On the road now
Taking this iPad to the road in its 1TB SSD configuration is exciting. The tablet is a real computer in every way. It weighs 684g plus the keyboard (almost a paradox but weighs a little more than the iPad: 710g) for a total of 1kg 394g, but the MacBook Air M2 weighs “only” 1kg at 240g.
In everything we’ve done, he’s performed admirably. It is a very compact and very well-balanced workstation if it can be used in a production series that allows you to cut out the traditional PC hardware and take advantage of the hardware features and the iPad operating system.
It’s definitely half a disappointment that the iPad Pro still has the 2018 design and that the device doesn’t take advantage of some of the features the new 10th generation iPad received, like the horizontal FaceTime camera and Magic Keyboard with function keys. The latter is certainly a function appreciated not only by those who often write but also by programmers, for example, who use the function keys (and the Esc key) more frequently than most other users.
What do we think
The limitations of iPadOS are slowly improving, and there are also those who argue that in a year or two there will be as much progress as bringing iPadOS closer to macOS. Of course, at present on the iPad Stage Manager, the new manager of the multitasking interface environment, is not yet ready to make a difference compared to other types of methods, such as the traditional style of nested windows on Mac and Windows. However, this iPad has all the right features and functions to go a long way with what’s available, despite its four-year-old design.
The addition of a stylus that “touches” the screen to activate images such as previewing a drawing effect is considered by those doing artwork to be a big change, waiting for Apple to introduce the iPad Plus to those in need. Less power and low cost but with a large screen, this is definitely the best solution for digital artists. Moreover, with the arrival of other video and photo production software, and with the possibility to purchase a model with up to 2TB of space, the “large” iPad Pro also becomes an industry productivity tool for photographers and videographers who can count on big budgets and need maximum quality and versatility. .
The iPad Pro 12.9 M2 is the tool we feel comfortable using if we have to carry out a photographic batch with high-quality equipment (producing raw files of 100 megapixels and more) and we need the maximum autonomy and flexibility, as well as the quality that the iPad can provide.
