Apple’s new operating system for smartphones, iOS 16, has arrived. It brings with it a lot of news as well as some small youth problems and some controversy.
While it’s true that iOS 16 is more popular than iOS 15 and adoption is on the rise, it’s also true that there are bugs that new beta versions are solving (like those with GPS) on iPhone 14 Pro) and there are those bugs who complain that iOS 16 slows down Spotlight and consumes more battery power on older phones.
Behind all these issues and information, the real question is another. What does iOS 16 look like? Is it worth upgrading if you’re using a phone that can support it? In the next few lines, our answers.
iOS 16 تاريخ History
The new operating system has been making noise since its launch at the last WWDC, the developer conference in July that opened the doors to Apple’s campus for the first time since the pandemic began. And still no one knows anything about the new Dynamic Island, as the new notification mode is only available on the just introduced iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max which will likely be the standard for phones of the future.
Released on June 6, available first as a developer beta and then as a public beta for all of our August racers (but they’re still reasonably stable releases), iOS 16 is a top-notch iPhone OS update. Let’s see why.
First, iOS 16 Unlock the ability to customize your lock screen, with a mode very similar to the one used on the Apple Watch: quick display configuration, simplified management of the internal display, and the ability to change and add it in an instant. Also, now on the screen You can add two categories of things: widgets of compatible applicationsI (which increases systematically with the organization of developers) Animated wallpapers. Some of them prepared by Apple (like Weather) are very useful.
Notifications now allow you to get them Something called live activitiesLive activity (runner’s arrival time, Uber car, race or match results) It is not actually available yet. As gods were created Filters for “Do Not Disturb” mode, which allows you to set the type of notifications and possible interactions with the phone. Configuration is simplified and it also touches the Apple Watch, allowing for example to change the screen and face on the phone and the watch automatically.
There are improvements to messages Enhanced (delete and edit messages) mail (email scheduling) functionality for Health (to take medication) and Fitness.
Big and small changes, real new ways to use the phone or just small improvements are too many to sum up here. Even Apple on its site leaves dozens and dozens behind. It’s worth noting that while using macOS Ventura (which will be released later with iPadOS), System Preferences are no longer there but now the control panels are grouped into an app called System Settings which follows the iOS app, on the Apple phone the menus and available options have been reorganized. However, on Ventura, patterns (“keys”) very similar to those of iOS were used, causing many discussions.
There are also some small goodies: compressed and rearranged notifications, the ability to get haptic feedback when you type, a new battery menu with a digital indicator of the percentage of power remaining, greater privacy in photos and other little ways to rearrange our life inside our phone we’ve collected in this article About settings and configurations to try it out.
Everyday life with iOS 16
There are different moments in the life of operating systems. When it’s announced but not yet released, there is curiosity, and sometimes a great desire to try it out. Then there is the out-of-company beta phase, which was previously done only with developers but now includes a very large number of users who have decided to test the public beta for Apple’s operating systems. Finally, there is the official version that touches millions and millions of users who own suitable terminals.
After a first “honeymoon” moment of admiring the new operating system, which makes even some time phones look new, then the habit should take over, as often happens with Apple products, a sense of ease that leads to the question “How was our business before the arrival of These new features?”
iOS 16 now spans these last two phases. After a few days of use, it became more and more a habit, and just as in a new home we moved in, we took our furniture and things with us, we got used to new paths and new forms of doing things.
We are not talking about Dynamic Island because this functionality requires iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. As we saw in our iPhone 14 Pro test, these new devices are “a center of new ideas (Dynamic Island ahead of others) and new technologies (48MP camera and satellite connectivity) that give iPhone 14 Pro the identity of a new platform on which Apple can Start building future iPhones.”
But how does it run on older devices? How many jobs are left? Less than you might think, because this year Mainly improvements in the software. And we’ve seen in our experience that using this operating system is great: it was tested on the third generation iPhone SE and iPhone 13 Pro Max, as well as on the iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch screen, and I quickly realized it. Which we consider the most important thing: It made us forget what life was like with iOS 15.
Battery consumption has remained standard, and we haven’t had any issues other than an issue with Spotlight responding more slowly to searches, but Apple is working on it.
Operation on previous smartphones
When referring to iOS 16 features, we have deliberately avoided talking about those that have to do with a particular aspect: video camera. This is because, unlike the Dynamic Island which offers a hardware difference (the two slots instead of the notch) which is necessary to run the function, as opposed to most Apple phones They can immediately use many of the innovations in the operating system even if they have processors and video cameras from previous years.
What “does not disappear”, that is, which requires different hardware, is clearly the possibility of taking 48-megapixel photos, improved software for people recognition and automatic outlines. There is no optical engine (image pre-processing to improve performance at the time of shooting) but there Several other algorithms that make the use of the camera a little better even in previous models, depending on the available hardware.
The same consideration applies, for example, to the power saving mode, which is now also introduced in Apple Watches. Apple is slowly introducing innovations that are only compatible with the newer or newer versions (see live text below) of their devices because they actually depend on hardware functionality. However, the effort to make using the company’s phones as smooth as possible, and trying to make sure as many reasonably possible are compatible with the latest OS version, is truly commendable.
The new iOS 16 brings a number of welcome changes to existing features that make things easier and more powerful like Maps, Messages, and Mail. They are not major changes, but in our opinion they contribute in a clear and unmistakable way to the improvement of the iPhone experience. And there’s a lot more: We’ve only listed the basics but there are at least a hundred small or medium-sized innovations that make this operating system a truly profound update, both in terms of aesthetics and in the way some of the features run “under the hood” (such as image management algorithms, for example).
However, it must be considered that, in any case, iOS 16 It’s not a revolutionary rethinking of Apple’s iPhone softwareIt is an extension of the features that already exist. The apps you rely on are better, new features are improved, and new additions fit as if they were always there. In our opinion, you can ask for more in the iOS update.
Now, despite the early youth issues we mentioned at the beginning, iOS 16 is very stable compared to the beta version. However, OS versions get better and more stable over time, so if you don’t want to, you don’t need to upgrade your phone right away. However, not all of the new features of iOS 16 are compatible with all iOS 16 compatible phones. For example, as we said above, Live Text and Visual Look Up are only available on iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone XR and iPhone XS. Just like the Dynamic Island we saw is exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Software update does not make drastic changes, but rIt makes iPhones more convenient, secure, and fun. More consideration, which is always made when it comes to operating system updates in general that also affect those of Apple: Remember that new versions of any operating system are always the most secure.
The issue of security, especially in recent years, has become very sensitive. However, it must be understood that Apple’s legendary security does not happen by chance or magic. Apple is not a monastery of processors that produce bomb-proof operating systems: security is instead achieved through technical choices but also with constant monitoring and investments to produce improvements and update strategies designed to protect users. In this, Apple is taking a few steps forward with the defense mechanism of the iPhone thanks to iOS 16, using improved algorithms, and mitigating all known vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to try to infiltrate your phone or remove it completely. So, from the second point of view, a good reason to upgrade your phone, if compatible, to iOS 16 is to make it more secure.
